All You Need To Know About IBJJF Hall Of Fame Award

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is the governing body that holds some of the biggest BJJ tournaments in the world. IBJJF has the title of IBJJF Hall of Fame which is given to those who have made some record that was not achieved by someone else. To achieve this title, it is important that a BJJ athlete must be the IBJJF World Champion at least four times in his black belt career.


BJJ athletes who are inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame must have some extraordinary performance in their fighting career or coaching career.

Alexandre Couceiro Ribeiro is a 5th-degree black belt under Saulo Ribeiro. During his black belt career, he won the  IBJJF Gi World Championship seven times, and the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship twice.  Alexandre Rebierois one of the founders of the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014 for his impressive contributions to the sport.

Rolls Gracie is considered an ambassador and innovator of modern-day Jiu-Jitsu. He trained in various martial arts. Rolls Gracie promoted 10 black belts who are still serving the BJJ world with their grappling skills. Due to his services for BJJ, Rolls Gracie was also inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame.

Romero Cavalcanti was the last black belt of Rolls Gracie. He is an 8th-degree master (red and white belt). He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016. He trained various legendary black belts including Fabio Gurgel, Leonardo Vieira, Alexandre Paiva, and Rodrigo “Comprido. He defeated many members of the Gracie family and also served BJJ with his coaching. He is one of the most influential personalities in the grappling world. In 2009, he was awarded the “On the Mat” Instructor of the Year award.

Royler Gracie, a BJJ legend himself, is the son of BJJ legend, Helio Gracie. He was promoted to black belt by his father Helio Gracie. Now, he is an 8th-degree red and black belt. He is 4 times world champion. Royler Gracie was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016.

4. Conclusion:

IBJJF Hall of Fame list owns 23 male and 8 female inductees awarded with IBJJF Hall of Fame titles. All these athletes have made some records that distinguish them from other athletes. Carlos Gracie Jr, Carlson Gracie, Roll Gracie, and Romero Cavalcanti were inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016 due to their unlimited services for BJJ.
