All You Need To Know About IBJJF Hall Of Fame Award

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is the governing body that holds some of the biggest BJJ tournaments in the world. IBJJF has the title of IBJJF Hall of Fame which is given to those who have made some record that was not achieved by someone else. To achieve this title, it is important that a BJJ athlete must be the IBJJF World Champion at least four times in his black belt career.

BJJ athletes who are inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame must have some extraordinary performance in their fighting career or coaching career.

Here is the list of IBJJF Hall of Fame inductees along with their achievements in the IBJJF tournaments.

Alexandre Couceiro Ribeiro is a 5th-degree black belt under Saulo Ribeiro. During his black belt career, he won the  IBJJF Gi World Championship seven times, and the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship twice.  Alexandre Rebierois one of the founders of the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014 for his impressive contributions to the sport.

Andre Galvao is a 4th-degree black belt under Luis Dagmar. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022. Andre Galvao is five times world champion in black belt and a five-time world champion in color belts.

Bernardo Faria is a 4 times World Champion and also the winner of various major IBJJF tournaments. He was promoted to black belt by Ricardo Marques. Faria was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022.  Bernardo Faria is the co-founder of one of the most important and successful BJJ sites, BJJ Fanatics.

Bruno Malfacine is the 4th-degree black belt under Vinicius Amaral. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016. Bruno is 10 times world champion in black belt and two times world champion in colored belt divisions. He is currently associated with the Alliance team. He is the best rooster weight grappler who won 10 world championships in this weight division.

Carlos Gracie Jr. was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016 due to his services for BJJ. He is the Co-Founder of the greatest BJJ organizations including Gracie Barra, IBJJF, CBJJ, and Gracie Mag. Carlos Gracie Junior is 8th Degree Coral Belt.

Carlson Gracie was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016 due to his services to Jiu-Jitsu. He is 9th Degree Black Belt and created various BJJ gems. Almost 110 black belts are introduced to the BJJ world by Carlson Gracie.

Fabio Gurgel is the 7th-degree red and black coral belt in BJJ. He received his black belt under Romero ``Jacare" Cavalcanti, one of the black belts of Rolls Gracie. He is a co-founder of Alliance Jiu-Jitsu. Fabio Gurgel is 4 times IBJJF World Champion and 3 times European Open Champion.

Guilherme Mendes is a 3rd-degree black belt under Ramon Lemos. He is 4 times world champion in black belt division. Guilherme Mendes along with his brother Rafael Mendes opened his academy named Art of Jiu-Jitsu. Rafael was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022.

Lucas Lepri, a  black belt under Elan Santiago,  is now a 4th-degree black belt. Lucas Lepri is seven times IBJJF World Champion in his black belt career. In 2022, Lucas Lepri was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame.

Marcelo Garcia is a fourth-degree black belt. He received his black belt under the great master, Fabio Gurgel. He is 5 times world champion. Marcelo Garcia, one of the best pound-for-pound submission grapplers in the world, was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Marcus Almeida, also known as Buchecha, is a second-degree black belt. He received his black belt under Rodrigo Cavaca. As a black belt, he won the IBJJF World Championship. Buchecha was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Rafael Mendes is a third-degree black belt under Ramon Lemos. He and his brother, Guilherme Mendes, are founders of the Arts of Jiu-Jitsu Academy, one of the most famous BJJ academies. Rafael Mendes is six times world champion in black belt rank. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022.

Roberto Magalhães, known as Roleta, is an All-Time Greatest BJJ Grappler who revolutionized traditional BJJ with his innovative techniques such as inverted guard. In 1996, Magalhaes received his black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. He is four times world champion. Roberto Magalhães was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Robson Moura is a sixth-degree black belt under Andre Pederneiras. He is five times world champion in his black belt rank. Robson Moura founded the RMNU (Robson Moura Nations United) Association. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022.

Rodolfo Vieira Srour is a black belt under Julio Cesar. He is five times world champion in his black belt career. Rodolfo was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame. He represented himself as one of the best  heavyweight competitors of his generation.

Roger Gracie, one of the best representatives of the Gracie family and famous for never being submitted, is ten times world champion. He is a black belt under Carlos Gracie Junior. Now he is a 5th-degree black belt. Roger Gracie was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Rolls Gracie is considered an ambassador and innovator of modern-day Jiu-Jitsu. He trained in various martial arts. Rolls Gracie promoted 10 black belts who are still serving the BJJ world with their grappling skills. Due to his services for BJJ, Rolls Gracie was also inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame.

Romero Cavalcanti was the last black belt of Rolls Gracie. He is an 8th-degree master (red and white belt). He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016. He trained various legendary black belts including Fabio Gurgel, Leonardo Vieira, Alexandre Paiva, and Rodrigo “Comprido. He defeated many members of the Gracie family and also served BJJ with his coaching. He is one of the most influential personalities in the grappling world. In 2009, he was awarded the “On the Mat” Instructor of the Year award.

Royler Gracie, a BJJ legend himself, is the son of BJJ legend, Helio Gracie. He was promoted to black belt by his father Helio Gracie. Now, he is an 8th-degree red and black belt. He is 4 times world champion. Royler Gracie was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016.

Rubens Charles Maciel is a 4th-degree black belt. He received his black belt under Fernando Augusto Terere. He is five times world champion in Gi and four times world champion in the No-Gi category. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Romulo Barral is a fourth-degree black belt. He received his black belt from Vinicius Magalhães and is affiliated with Gracie Barra. Romulo Barral is 5 times world champion and various times champion in other major IBJJF tournaments. Romulo Barral was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Saulo Filho is a 6th-degree black belt under Royler Gracie. He won the IBJJF Gi World Championship five times and IBJJF No-Gi World Championship once. Saulo Ribeiro was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the co-founder of the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association which is one of the most successful BJJ Associations in the world.

Leandro Lo was a black belt under Cicero Costha and 8 times world champion in five different weight divisions in his black belt career. Leandro Lo was a third-degree black belt. He was inducted posthumously into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2023.

Beatriz Mesquita is a 2nd-degree black belt under Leticia Ribeiro. She is a highly-decorated BJJ athlete and holds the most IBJJF World Championship titles under her belt. She is a 7 times world champion in Gi and once in No-Gi in her black belt career and 4 times world champion in her color belt career. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022.

Bianca Andrade is a black belt under Diojone Farias. She is now a fifth-degree black belt. Bianca is four times world champion in Gi and two times world champion in No-Gi in her black belt career. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Gabrielle Garcia is a black belt under Fabio Gurgel. She got a third strip on his black belt and became a 3rd degree black belt. Gabi Garcia is six times world champion in her black belt career and once in her color belt career. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014. She was submitted for the first time in 2021 and due to her record breakdown of never being submitted, she announced her retirement from BJJ.

Hannette Quadros is a fourth-degree black belt and received her black belt under André “Negão” Terêncio. She is five times IBJJF World Champion in the Gi category and also won the World NoGi tournament once.. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Kyra Gracie is the fourth-degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Junior. She is five times world champion. Kyra Gracie is the first female black belt in the Gracie family. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Leticia Ribeiro is a 6th-degree black belt. She received her black belt under Vinicius Aieta. Leticia is seven times world champion in Gi and two times world champion in No-Gi tournaments. She was inducted into IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Luanna Alzuguir is a 4th-degree black belt. She received her black belt under Marco Barbosa. Luanna was ranked the number 1 BJJ athlete by IBJJF in 2013.  She is five times IBJJF World Gi Champion and also won the IBJJF NoGi World Championship once. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.

Michelle Nicolini is the 3rd-degree black belt under Robert Drysdale. She is 8 times world champion in Gi and two times in No-Gi. She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014. She is the third most accomplished BJJ female athlete.

IBJJF Hall of Fame list owns 23 male and 8 female inductees awarded with IBJJF Hall of Fame titles. All these athletes have made some records that distinguish them from other athletes. Carlos Gracie Jr, Carlson Gracie, Roll Gracie, and Romero Cavalcanti were inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2016 due to their unlimited services for BJJ.

The list given in this article is according to the year 2023. The list of IBJJF Hall of Fame is increasing with time as new athletes who are brimming with talent make new records. IBJJF has recently announced that Leandro Lo (late), the BJJ legend, is inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame list.
