2. Elijah Dorsey Biography
Elijah Dorsey is an elite black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Dorsey represents the Lloyd Irvin Team under Lloyd Irvin and Donald Achnick in BJJ. During his colored belt position, he won multiple gold and silver medals in IBJJF World and IBJJF Pan Championships. In 2023, he recently won the ADCC East Coast Trials title, securing his place in the ADCC World Championships 2024.
2.1. Elijah Dorsey’s Childhood
Elijah Dorsey was born in Annapolis, USA, on September 09, 2001, but grew up in Upper Marlboro. When Dorsey was a kid, he was very interested in football, basketball, and baseball. At 6, he was introduced to martial arts during a summer camp when he saw his brother performing martial arts. He started martial arts for self-defense and learned Muay Thai and other self-defense techniques. In 2008, he finally joined Lloyd Irvin’s training center, acquiring the training for jiu-jitsu under a great instructor, Donald Achnick.
2.2. Elijah Dorsey’s BJJ Career
Elijah Dorsey revealed in one of his interviews that football is still his favorite. However, after joining Lloyd Irvin’s training class, his interest in Jiu-jitsu developed. He was then promoted to the Master Programme for Kids, where he learned more advanced jiu-jitsu techniques. When Dorsey was in ninth grade, he participated in his first juvenile tournament in the Pans Championship, securing a bronze medal. Since then, he hasn’t stopped. He earned IBJJF World and Pan Championships titles with his colored belts and became a rising athlete as he progressed through the ranks.
2.3. Elijah Dorsey Promoted to Black Belt
In June 2022, Master Lloyd Irvin and Donald Achnick realized the potential and exceptional skills of Dorsey and promoted him to a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Soon after he got promoted, his debut black belt competition was in the European Championship. He won two matches but lost to Andy Murasaki in the semifinals, winning a bronze. After that, he starts preparing for ADCC East Coast Trials 2023.
“Competing against Europeans was very different." The place itself caused a difference in my preparation from when I arrived until I competed. Until then, I had never traveled outside of the country. I was content with my matches. Although I think I left a few things behind, I also learned a lot and have plans to build on that experience”
2.4. Elijah Dorsey’s Story Behind His Nickname
Elijah Dorsey is famous for his unique nickname “Big Breakfast”. During one of his interviews when Dorsey asked about the secret behind his nickname, he said:
“I got my nickname from my teammate Jamal; he's the first African-American Black Belt World Champion. He gave me this nickname because I eat a lot, and a big breakfast just gives a good ring; whenever we go to tournaments, we always travel as a team so that I would eat my food, and then I would eat everybody else's food if they didn't finish. I'm glad that's the name because I like breakfast more than everything”
2.5. Elijah Dorsey BJJ’s Highest Achievements
Throughout the time of Dorsey’s juvenile and colored belts tournaments, he gained popularity by winning gold and silver medals multiple times in the IBJJF World and Pan American Championships. In 2023, after obtaining a black belt, he became a gold medalist in the ADCC East Coast Trials.
Dorsey shared his outstanding experience after winning a gold medal in his interview. He said:
“ADCC means the world to me. After winning this big event, I feel like a Crown Champion at one of the biggest events in Jiu-Jitsu”
