Andrew Aspinall: A Father Who Quit His Job for His Son’s BJJ Development

Thomas Paul Aspinall is a renowned English professional mixed martial artist who recently secured the Interim Heavyweight Championship title in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). After winning the title, Tom dedicated his victory to his father, Andrew Aspinall. Tom Aspinall competed against Sergei Pavlovich and won the match by knockout in the first round. Tom executed a lethal right hook and then followed it with different ground strikes to win the match.

Tom became the third UFC Champion from his motherland by defeating his opponent. After the match ended, Tom also shared his experience of competing with Sergei. He said:

‘’It’s been a crazy two and a half weeks. Pavlovich is a big scary guy. I’ve never been as scared in my life as fighting this guy, but you know what? I’ve got a lot of power too and I believe in myself. I really believe in myself.’’

Tom Aspinall also gave credit to his father by saying,

“This man right here, my father, has worked harder than anybody. So, this belt right here is dedicated to my father.”

Tom was so overwhelmed and sentimental as he shared that his father left his job when he was 12 years old. Andrew wanted to make his son a pro-BJJ grappler. Tom and his father also sparred together in the garden. After some time, Andrew Aspinall established his new jiu-jitsu coaching institute.

Once in a Sun Interview, Andrew also shared about his job quitting. He said:

‘’I was a contractor for a long time making good money and then I was an IT manager. I got offered a redundancy payment that I didn’t have to take, but Tom was very good at Jiu-Jitsu and there weren’t many Jiu-Jitsu schools open. I just decided to teach Jiu-Jitsu and hoped that Tom at 12, and my other son at 9, would teach Jiu-Jitsu because they’d have a career then.’’
