2. Jamil Hill Taylor Biography
Jamil Hill is a globally renowned IBJJF champion who inspires other BJJ aspirants and enthusiasts to pursue jiu-jitsu professionally. Hill became the top grappler of his generation due to the class-leading training he received as a kid in the Lloyd Irvin Academy. Hill not only bagged medals by winning several prestigious BJJ championships at the lower belt levels but also made a mark for himself by winning these tournaments at the highly competitive black belt level.
2.1. Early Life & Athletic Childhood
Jamil Hill was born on December 08, 1995, in Suitland, Maryland, United States. Hill had quite an athletic childhood
He enjoyed playing football and his first martial arts experience was of taekwondo. At the tender age of 8, Hill discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu, when he made a few friends at Team Lloyd Irvin’s Summer Camp, who compelled him to give BJJ a try. Since Hill was already practicing a martial arts discipline, trying out jiu-jitsu didn’t seem far-fetched or bizarre to him. After his first session, his interest was piqued significantly and he became even more inclined to grapple and train jiu-jitsu. Shane Hill recalls his first BJJ experience in these words:
“During my first week of camp, I was told to pass on the of the grappling kids’ guard, and for 5 minutes I tried to run around the legs with no success. From that moment, I wanted to train. At the end of the Summer, I was put into the grappling program.”
2.2. Training Jiu-Jitsu
After the summer camp, Hill got enrolled in the BJJ kids program at the Lloyd Irvin Academy, where he trained under the tutelage of Donal Achnick, best known as Master Donnie. Achnick’s influence on Hill shaped his career and helped him become a successful professional BJJ athlete. Master Donnie’s grappling techniques are still reflected in Hill’s rolling and submission style.
2.3. Entering the Competitive BJJ Circuit
Shane Hill entered the competitive sphere of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2005 at the age of 10. He immediately developed a liking for the competitive aspect of jiu-jitsu, as it helped him unleash his true potential and push his limits even more. Besides his training sessions, the consistent participation in several BJJ tournaments at different belt levels polished Hill as a BJJ athlete.
2.4. Pursuing BJJ Professionally
In 2009, Hill observed the bouts at the 2009 IBJJF World Championship and resolved to become a professional BJJ practitioner. In 2010, he participated in the IBJJF World Championship Juvenile as a blue belt and secured second place.
2.5. Continuous Success at Colored Belt Levels
Bagging a silver medal in his first IBJJF World Championship competition boosted Hill’s confidence. After this achievement, he continued to climb the ladder of success and won the IBJJF World three times in the lower belt divisions.
2.6. Black Belt Promotion
After displaying remarkable grappling skills on the mats of the world’s most important BJJ tournaments, Hill was promoted to the black belt level in June 2016.
