BJJ Instructor Penalized $46 Million after the Legal Battle of Four Years

A San Diego court ruling has made headlines after 28 years old Jack Greener, a BJJ White Belt was declared eligible for a staggering $46 million following a catastrophic spinal injury sustained during a drilling session. In 2018, Jack Greener was left paralyzed in all extremities after an instructor at the Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club applied a maneuver, causing Greener to bear the full body weight on his neck.

Greener's life was changed forever in 2018 due to multiple surgeries and a prolonged hospital stay. He was only to be left with the devastating condition of quadriplegia. The severity of the incident was noted by his law firm, Panish Shea Boyle Ravipudi, who stated that Greener's case sought compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, and loss of health and money. After the legal battle of almost five years, the struggle paid off when the jury decided in favor of financial assistance to Greener.

However, this unfortunate and unintentional incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper instruction and technique in high-intensity contact sports like grappling. Even the most benign-looking moves can have devastating consequences, and the outcome for Greener highlights the need for caution in all aspects of contact sports and martial arts training.
