2. Marcos Tinoco’s Biography
Marcos Tinoco is a 2nd-Degree BJJ Black Belt under the legend Marcelo Garcia, a 4th-Degree BJJ Black Belt. He is associated with Team Alliance. He is a former student of Juarez Soares. Marcos Tinoco became famous after his epic performance in the 2014 IBJJF World Championship in the Brown Belt category.
2.1. Marcos Tinoco’s Early Life
Marcos Tinoco was born on 18 December, 1988 in Araruama, the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Trained Under Master Juarez Soares
Marcos Tinoco started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he was 16 years old. He trained under Master Juarez Soares. Training under Master Juarez, enhanced his athleticism and competitive endurance of Marcos. Master Juarez Soares is himself a former student of Monir Salomao, a legendary coach who graded Julio Cesar and World Champion Marcos Barreto.
Master Juarez Saores had worked with important federations such as FJJ-Rio, the CBJJ, and the IBJJF.
At Araruama Jiu-Jitsu
Marcos Tinoco trained under Master Juarez at Araruama Jiu-Jitsu. There Marcos became part of the competitive team of Araruama Jiu-Jitsu. Having the Brazilian native fighting spirit in him, Marcos became a tough competitor. He won many local and statewide tournaments while being part of that tournament-driven team.
Traveled to the United States
Because of Marcos Tinoco’s consistency and training ethics, he soon became a famous grappler. By continuously trying to overcome his flaws through his rigorous training regime. It was then that he wanted to compete in tough tournaments and championships.
Tinoco obtained funds with the help of his teammates, Andre de Freitas and Bruno Lima, and got the authorization so that he could travel to the United States to participate in international championships.
Started Working as a Coach
Due to his marvelous performance and iconic win in the Pan American Championship in the United States, he was offered to stay in America and work as a coach. That offer was made by his companion, Eder Perciliano.
Marcos Tinoco’s Wife
Tinoco met Hana at the IBJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2012. Hana was also competing at that time. Later, Tinoco married Hana. Hana Silva Tinoco is an excellent grappler. She is an instructor at Bernardo Faria Academy. She received her Black Belt from Marcelo Garcia in 2019. She specializes in teaching BJJ to kids.
Trained With The Legend Marcelo Garcia
As Hana worked at Marcelo Garcia’s affiliate gym, MBJJ in Memphis, she was the one who encouraged Tinoco to go and train with Marcelo Garcia. Marcos Tinoco was hesitant at first but then started training under Marcelo Garcia.
It impacted Tinoco very much as his fighting style improved and his techniques developed excellent finishing touches. After attending a few training sessions at MG Headquarters in New York, Marcos Tinoco decided to switch teams, left Araruama Jiu-Jitsu and joined MG Headquarters. He asked his former coach Master Juarez Soares and he gave Tinoco his consent. In 2013, Marcos Tinoco joined Marcelo Garcia Headquarters permanently.
After receiving his Black Belt in 2015, Marcos Tinoco started teaching BJJ at Marcelo Garcia’s Academy.
Instructor At Bernardo Faria Academy
Today, Marcos Tinoco is an instructor at Bernardo Faria Academy along with his wife, Hana Silva Tinoco. Over the past 10 years. Marcos has dedicated himself to teaching BJJ to kids and adults. He pushes his students to their full potential to make them excellent and accomplished grapplers.
2.2. Marcos Tinoco’s Pro BJJ Combats
IBJJF Abu Dhabi Pro
In 2012, Marcos participated in the IBJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro Championship as a Purple Belt and won 2nd place.
Promoted to Brown Belt
Marcos Tinoco was promoted to Brown Belt by Marcelo Garcia in 2013.
IBJJF NY Pro Championship
Marcos Tinoco competed in IBJJF NYC Pro Championship as a Brown Belt and won the 1st position.
Promoted to Black Belt
After becoming a part of Marcelo Garcia’s Team, Tinoco’s BJJ career went to soaring heights. He won many tournaments and championships. He won the World title in 2014, after becoming a part of Marcelo Garcia’s Team.
He was promoted to Black Belt on 19 January 2015 by Marcelo Garcia and Jonathan Satava, one of the most significant competitors from the same team.
IBJJF European Open Champion
Tinoco became IBJJF European Open Champion in 2017 and 2018 with 1st place.

Marcos Tinoco Vs. Lucas Leite
Lucas Leite is a BJJ Black Belt under Leonardo Vieira. Lucas Leite’s fighting game is exceptional, especially in the absolute weight category. He is the kind of fighter for whom size does not matter but strength does. Whereas Marcos Tinoco was not as experienced as Lucas Leite, back in 2016 but his aggressive game made him win the fight. Marcos is often called an “Aggressive Opportunistic Submission Hunter” based on his fighting techniques. The single-leg takedowns by Lucas were very accurate but Marcos won the match by gaining 3 advantage points.
