BJJ Master Marcelo Garcia is Diagnosed with Cancer and Waiting for Chemo & Surgery

On the morning of January 19, 2023, ADCC Hall of Famer and legendary Coach Marcelo shared the tragic news of his Stomach cancer diagnosis to the BJJ world. The 40-year-old, father of two shared the details of his treatment and told the BJJ community that his chemo is due in three months, and then tumor removal surgery from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

“Please keep me and my family on your prayers,” Garcia wrote to his followers. “Get your check ups, listen to your body, all I had was hiccups after eating and I’m glad I went to see a doctor.”

The whole BJJ community mourned the sad news and conveyed their sincere condolences and best wishes for a speedy recovery, including Rafael Lovato Jr, Andre Galvao, Claudia Duvall, Demian Maia, and Eddie Bravo among many others.

The whole fighting and coaching career of the ADCC Hall of Famer is filled with great accomplishments including winning four different championships under his weight category. He is now retired from active flighting and operates his renowned and world-class Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu gym in NYC.
