Four Things to Check Before You Buy

Waistband and drawstring. An elastic waistband with a drawstring lets you dial in the fit so the shorts don’t slide during scrambles.
Side slits. They give your legs room to move through guard passes and high kicks.
Stitching. Reinforced seams matter most where the pulling happens, around the hips and inner legs.
Nothing hard. No pockets, zippers, buttons, or metal and plastic parts that could catch a finger or scratch a partner.

What shorts are best for BJJ? What shorts to wear for BJJ no-gi?

The best shorts for No-Gi BJJ are ones with elastic waistbands and no pockets, buttons, zippers, or buckles. To help tighten the shorts around your waist, there is a drawstring you can pull and tie in a knot. The material should be tear-resistant and have reinforced stitchting to prevent the seams from becoming torn. The side slits should allow you to raise and stretch your legs without restriction.

What are the rules for shorts in BJJ? What are the requirements for no GI shorts?

No-Gi shorts cannot have pockets, exposed drawstrings, zippers, buttons, or any plastic or metal pieces attached. The color of the shorts should reflect your current skill level in BJJ. The shorts should be at an appropriate length; the legs of the jiu jitsu shorts should cover most of the upper thigh but stop right above the knees.

Can you grab shorts in no-gi?

In No-Gi BJJ, it is considered an illegal move to try and grab your opponent by their jiu jitsu shorts.

Do you wear shorts under GI BJJ?

You can wear shorts under the BJJ gi pants if you prefer to grapple with extra protection. Shorts can offer an extra layer of skin protection, protecting you from abrasions, skin infections, and chafing. They can also help with comfort since they are sweat-wicking which help keep you cool and dry.

How long should BJJ shorts be?

Mostly personal preference. Knee-length is common, and shorter cuts give a bit more freedom. If you compete, check your event’s rules.

Can I wear regular gym shorts to no-gi?

For a first class, many gyms will let you, as long as there are no pockets, zippers or hard parts. Gym shorts tend to bunch up, ride around and tear, though. Grappling shorts are cut for the way you actually move.

Do I need ranked or colored shorts for no-gi?

Only if you compete somewhere that requires it. IBJJF no-gi limits colors to black, white or black and white, with rank color allowed. For regular classes, wear any color your gym allows.

What do I wear under no-gi shorts?

Many grapplers wear compression shorts or spats for support and to stop chafing. It isn’t required, but it keeps your shorts from riding up.
