How to Choose a BJJ Gi
To determine the best fit, confirm your height and weight before checking the size chart. Try to find the size where your height and weight intersect on the grid.
Please note that sizing differs between brands, so don’t order based on the size you may have used elsewhere. A good fit should have little to no loose fabric while still allowing you to move freely.
Before picking a color, ask your coach if any gi colors are not allowed. Some academies have different standards for what is considered appropriate training apparel.
IBJJF Gi Rules at a Glance
If you are planning to take part in IBJJF tournaments, you must check and confirm that your uniform follows regulations. The basic rules of gis appropriate for IBJJF include the following:
- Colors: solid white, royal blue, or black. Jacket, pants, and collar should be the same color.
- Fabric weight: 380 to 650 GSM (grams per square meter) since the 2024 Gi World Championship.
- Under the gi: women must wear a flexible, form-fitting shirt. Men can’t wear a shirt.
- Fit and patches: The end of the sleeves must rest about 2 cm from your wrists. The bottom of the pants must rest at the ankles. Patches can only be stitched onto specific parts of the uniform at the arms, legs, shoulders, waist, chest, and back.
Check the IBJJF website for any updates to the rules on BJJ gis allowed in official competitions.
How Many BJJ Gis Do You Need?
The number of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis you need depends on your training schedule and laundry routine.
If you train once or twice a week, one gi may be enough, provided it is washed and fully dried after every session.
For frequent training, owning multiple BJJ gis makes it easier to have a clean uniform available for each class without having to constantly do laundry.
Before ordering, check the size chart, product details, and return and exchange policy to make sure you choose the right option for your needs.
