22 years young, first generation American woman, born in Phoenix, Az. Spent the last 10 years in Illinois, where I first begun training martial arts. To put things simply: I had a rough time growing up and finding martial arts was one of the best things that couldve happened to me. It helped teach me self-discipline and became a healthy outlet for the stress I was internalizing. That shit was life changing, and I'm forever grateful.
Q&A Session Between Sara Braun and Elite Sports
Question: What inspires you about BJJ? MMA?
Answer: When people know what they're doing, it can be a beautiful thing to watch. This is a tough sport that requires major dedication! I love seeing fighters evolve, helps fuel my drive too.
Question: Who inspires you, past or present? Why do they inspire you?
Answer: I know this is cliche, but Bruce Lee. On top of being one of the baddest fighters, his wisdom has served many people. His strength of will alone baffled me, the man NEVER gives up and always seemed to stayed true to himself. It's plain to see why he's inspired so many martial artists. My other previous inspiration is Felice Herrig. The first MMA gym I joined was called team Curran, Felice's home gym. I was 17 and I wanted to fight. I remember looking at her and thinking, wow look at her go. I want to become like that.
Question: What are your goals for this year? Next 3 years? Next 5 years?
Answer: By the end of this year, I want my training to stay consistent. In 3 years, I better have some cage fights under my belt. The next 5 years, only god knows. I don't know what to expect, I just do my best to stay on the path meant for me.
Question: How often do you train?
Answer: This part has been tricky, lately I have mostly been in a regular gym, but now that things in my life are settling, I'm jumping back in at least 3x a week. However, I started my journey when I was 16 and joined Barrington Judo. I loved it, but craved more. Couldn't be happier that I chose to start learning to strike.
Question: What does it take to be a champ?
Answer: Staying persistent regardless of failures. Your mind is a powerful tool, and remaining positive in your thoughts will manifest itself back into your life. Question: Do you have a go-to finishing move?
Answer: My favorite submissions to use are rear naked choke and varieties of armbars. As for striking, I'm southpaw. So I'm fond of slamming people with my left fist. My left kick and push kicks might surprise you, they're solid.
Question: Any special items you use or keep in your gym bag?
Answer: My mouth guard, shin guards, Elite Boxing Gloves and a big ass bottle of water. Nothing special.
