Sarah Lynn began her Jiu-Jitsu journey at only 18 months old, playing the Gracie Games with her mom and Dad. She mastered the Gracie Games by the age of 2. At 4 years old, she began training with Prof Jorge Jiminez at the Gracie Balance Academy. A year later, she began training at Pete Snider Jiu-Jitsu in order to focus on competition training, working at a much higher intensity. She has recently added wrestling to her schedule with the help of Coach Tom Daly with wrestling.

She currently trains BJJ 4 times a week, in addition to wrestling twice a week. Sarah Lynn loves competition in almost any form and is excited at the prospect of greater challenges that lay ahead. She is grateful for all of the amazing coachings she has received, especially from Coach Joey Boga, and Professor Pete Snider.

Q&A Session Between Sarah Lynn Gausman and Elite Sports

Question: What inspires you about BJJ? MMA?

Answer: It is fun, actually amazing! I’m little, but with my Jiu Jitsu, I can beat much bigger and older kids. I love standing up for people and I hate bullies. Jiu Jitsu really helps with that.

Question: Who inspires you, past or present? Why do they inspire you?

Answer: My coach, Joey Boga. He inspires me with his Jiu Jitsu and coaching. He is amazing! When I see him roll, I get to see what is possible. He makes me work hard to improve. He always pushes me to be comfortable in bad positions by having me roll with kids who are 8-10 years old and are more than twice as heavy as me. He shows me that I can do more than I think I can. Coach Joey is why I never give up.

Question: What are your goals for this year? Next 3 years? Next 5 years?

Answer: To keep getting better. I’m adding wrestling to my training this fall to help with my takedowns. To be amazing! I will be old enough to enter IBJJF tournaments, so I’m excited to get to compete for more. I also want to travel to more competitions outside of Atlanta. DisciplineI hope to have no weaknesses. To be dangerous from all positions, just like a black widow spider. I hope to be travelling all over the world to compete and get the chance to train with all sorts of people and learn as much as I can.

Question: How long have you been training?

Answer: 2 years at Jiu-Jitsu academies. 4 ½ years since I started at home. I knew all the basic positions, could pass guard, and armbar when I was 18 months old.

Question: How often do you train?

Answer: 4 days a week at PTC Combat Fitness. Every day at home. I will be adding two days of wresting in October

Question: Any major accomplishments you’ve been able to achieve in that time?

Answer: I was given a yellow belt when I was 5, even though you are supposed to be 7 to get a yellow belt. I have also won 8 gold medals, 3 first place swords, 7 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

Question: Do you have a go-to finishing move?

Answer: Far-side armbar.

Question: What do you think it takes to be a champion in your sports?

Answer: Hard work. Learning from losses and mistakes. Practicing at home. I always give myself homework.

Question: What sort of gear do you usually keep in your gym bag before hitting the gym? Do you have different items for specific days?

Answer: My Elite GI, Rashguard, and water. Sometimes a snack.
