Biography

Her name is Maryellen Sinclair and She is currently a brown belt in both jiu jitsu from Soul Fighters and judo at Watanabe Judo. She has been competing in both jiu jitsu and judo for eight and five years respectively. She has placed in all the competitions that she had participated in. She is currently in training for many more jiu jitsu and judo competition for the 2018 season. She is looking forward to representing team Elite during the 2018 season.

Q&A Session Between Maryellen Sinclair and Elite Sports

Question: What inspires you about BJJ? MMA?

Answer: I find BJJ an inspiring sport because it promotes the concept that a smaller/weaker person can defend themselves against a larger/stronger person. I think this is empowering for women because it can help give them a sense confidence. This confidence, when used responsibly and intelligently, can be very powerful. Also, I enjoy the atmosphere of competition. Competition brings people together and allows growth and learning that gym training alone can not accomplish.

Question: Who inspires you, past or present? Why do they inspire you?

Answer: My greatest inspiration to train are all my teammates past and present. Each person that I have trained with has taught me something about the game and something about the type of jiu jitsu player I am and the type of player that I can be. Most importantly, my biggest inspirations are Jake and Curtis. They are my godsons and every time I step on to the mats with them I want to show them what a person can accomplish if they set their mind to a goal.

Question: What are your goals for this year? Next 3 years? Next 5 years?

Answer: My goals for the next year is to go back to master’s worlds and take first. Over the course of the next 3 and 5 years I want to compete and learn as much about my ability as a competitive grapplers and judoka as possible. I intend on competing at least four times each year in order to test my ability on the competition circuit.

Question: How long have you been training?

Answer: I have been training for 9 years in jiu jitsu and 6 years in judo.

Question: How often do you train?

Answer: I train a minimum of 4 times a week in jiu jitsu and 3 times in judo per week.

Question: Any major accomplishments you’ve been able to achieve in that time?

Answer: My biggest accomplishment was coming back from ACL surgery and winning masters worlds this year. It took a lot of focus but it was well worth all the effort to accomplish such a goal.

Question: Do you have a go-to finishing move?

Answer: My favorite move is hane gosh to arm bar.

Question: What do you think it takes to be a champion in your sports?

Answer: In order to be champion I think it takes perseverance, determination and an unwavering focus on the goal.

Question: What sort of gear do you usually keep in your gym bag before hitting the gym? Do you have different items for specific days?

Answer: In my gym bag for jiu jitsu and judo I usually carry my GI, my Belt, a clean shirt, sanitation wipes and protein powder. When off to the gym for a work out I carry lifting straps, a lifting belt, lifting gloves, pre and post workout powder and protein powder. When going to Muay Thai or kick boxing, there are my Boxing Gloves, wraps, pads, mouth guard, a clean shirt and protein powder.
