2005- 2006Trained out of dynamic martial arts in Rapid City, SD in submission grappling no-gi and muay thai Was a founding member of Kunsan Top Team in Kunsan AB, ROK in 2006 while I was in the United States Airforce. Had three amateur boxing matches in Korea and one amateur mma fight. Started training At Top game Bjj back in 2008 in the GI Received blue belt 2011 Received purple belt in 2017

Q&A Session Between Joshua L Johnson and Elite Sports

Question: What inspires you about BJJ? MMA?

Answer: I would say the overall environment and family experience that I have found in BJJ. To me bjj has become a life style and experience that I have grown to enjoy. I also enjoy the constant new challenges and techniques that I have learned.

Question: Who inspires you, past or present? Why do they inspire you?

Answer: I would say whole heartedly my mom. She has pushed me to do better in all portions of my life. She has inspired me with her work ethic and persistence sheer will do achieve a goal that she has set. But for Bjj I would say my Coach Chris Mahan. There have been times when I would not come to the gym and he would call or text me to see how I was doing. He would always tease me about a birthday cake I once got and would say that cake will get purple before I would. I got that cake at blue belt. Turns out the cake never made it to purple and I did.

Question: What are your goals for this year? Next 3 years? Next 5 years?

Answer: Finally compete at a Ibjjf event I would like to medal but mainly for the experience. The next three years I hope to be a brown belt and working on my black belt. Five years from now ill have my black belt under my coaches Chris Mahan and Gustavo Machado. Also between now and then work with local group homes and teach basic bjj fundamentals to those kids to help improve their life style and give confidence.

Question: How long have you been training?

Answer: I would say at least 12 years or so. I trained tae kwon do and shotokan karate when I was younger. I found submission grappling and Muay Thai while I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD. But for bjj I would say the last 6 years plus. I have had to take time away from bjj due to family.

Question: How often do you train?

Answer: I train three times a week for Muay Thaii or boxing. Five days a week for bjj. I also help coach kid’s class three days a week. I have just started to help supplement my training by adding hot yoga to the mix at three days a week

Question: Any major accomplishments you’ve been able to achieve in that time?

Answer: I have competed in a few in house competitions though my schools affiliations and have won three first place medals in the gi and two second place medals no gi. I have placed second at a few NAGA (North America grappling association) tournaments

Question: Do you have a go-to finishing move?

Answer: Depends on the positions I am in. If I am in full guard I would say the triangle choke. If I am in top side control I would say the baseball choke.

Question: What do you think it takes to be a champion in your sports?

Answer: To be a champion is a team and system effort. My coaches who watch me and help critic my technique and shows me where I am messing up on a technique and helps improve the technique. Training partners from white belts who are just learning all the way up to black because we are all are improving which makes me make adjustments to my gamer. The biggest thing I would say is being coachable

Question: What sort of gear do you usually keep in your gym bag before hitting the gym? Do you have different items for specific days?

Answer: In my bag this is what you will find most of my training sessions. My Elite GI, and current ranked belt. A Short sleeve, or long sleeve rash guard to wear under my gi top. Custom molded mouth guard and cleaning spray. Boxing gloves and shin guards. Finger tape, and regular athletic tape. A pair of knee pads for no gi training. Pre work out and post work out recovery mix. A liter of high alkaline water or Gatorade. Lastly a change of clothes and towel.
